Chloe Beauty Therapist Haven Takapuna

For our latest Q+A chat, we threw a bunch of getting-to-know-you questions to one of our own; Chloe Sowman, Clinic Manager at Haven Takapuna.

For those who have experienced a skin treatment with Chloe, you will know that she is an exceptional skin therapist with an incredible wealth of skin knowledge. Chloe is absolutely passionate about working with skin, she has a thorough understanding of how it functions as an organ, and knows what works and what doesn't to help address client's skin concerns.  So, we thought it was high time we got to know her a little more beyond the uniform.

What do you love most about your job?

Oooh, there are so many things I love about my job. What I love most is probably the trust and relationships that I build with my clients and with this trust I am able to change the way that a client feels about their skin. No ones skin is perfect but if I can make a client feel comfortable and confident within the skin that they are given, it makes me feel so good!

What is your most treasured possession?

This is hard as I am very good at looking after my things and belongings so over the years I have lots that I treasure. To put it down to one would have to be my silver bangle that I got for my 18th Birthday from my Mum and Dad. I have worn it every day ever since.

What is the best advice you have been given?

The best advice that I have been given is to not have unrealistic expectations; allow your friends to be who they are, allow your partner to be who they are, allow day to day life to go as it would. Just enjoy the ride and live in the moment.

Of course we need to set expectations but if they are achievable there is no room for disappointment and always room for growth.

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would it be and why?

I would simply want to be my cat Jet. He lives a life of luxury without a care in the world. He is a super fluffy all black cat who is fussed over at any opportunity by my family and I. The only decisions he needs to make in his little life is what spot of the house takes his fancy to sleep in all day. Life of Bliss!

On a Saturday night evening I am...

I am either getting all dolled up with my close girlfriends to have a few vino's, laughter and dancing or simply chilling at home with my partner and our two kids watching family movies and eating takeaways. I am very lucky to have a well rounded balance of friends and family time.

What is your must-have beauty product and why?

I am a big believer in exfoliation. I love the way it leaves your skin feeling, not to mention how fresh and bright it looks. Right now my favorite exfoliant is Osmosis Polish. It is super gentle with cranberry enzymes and gives an instant result.

For anyone without a proper at-home skincare routine, what tips can you offer, or products can you recommend?

You don't necessarily need a million beauty products to achieve amazing skin, you just need a few great star products that you know you will use regularly and constantly.

Non-negotiables to get your best skin at home are:

  • A great cleanser that doesn't contain filler ingredients
  • Exfoliant - preferably enzyme based
  • At least one active/advanced treatment serum
  • Eye cream
  • Moisturiser, and of course one that contains SPF for day time use.

I also think it is important to keep you skin care routine fun and exciting. so I like to use a treatment mask twice a  week or the night before a special event.

What is the most common mistake you see people make with their skincare?

It's really important that if you are investing in skin care products that you seek professional advice to ensure that you are using the right ingredients for your skin. Professional grade products are feeding the skin at a deeper level to achieve a change in the skin, so, regular, consistent feeding is the trick.

Ageing is a fact of life, skin blemishes and imperfections will occur and most of us who live in New Zealand will have some form of pigmentation. To address these things we need to work on them consistently, it takes time and patience.

Most of my clients are surprised to learn that 70% of skin care results will come from home care products, so this highlights the importance of using the correct products for your skin and seeking professional advice.

Professional in-clinic treatments are required to accelerate your home care routine, plus it is important to have regular treatments to track progress and get regular coaching. However, one facial will not "fix" your skin. This is definitely a common misconception.

Feel free to email Chloe if you have a question or would like advice about your skin.
